Squire Boone Caverns and Village

Office - s

Harrison County’s Squire Boone Caverns and Village.  Squire and Daniel Boone discovered the caverns two centuries ago.  Now, visitors can explore their underground waterfalls and enjoy beautiful scenic tours of the caverns.

Squire Boone Caverns, Village and Campground, are on Buck Creek about 5 miles northeast of Mauckport in Harrison County. Squire Boone and his older brother Daniel are said to have discovered the caves in 1790 while on a hunting expedition.
In 1804 Squire Boone and his family returned to settle in Grassy Valley, where the caves are located. Boone and his four sons cleared the land and built a large cabin and the first gristmill in Harrison County. Water from a huge spring flowing from the entrance of the larger cave powered the mill.

Another highlight of the tour are the various speleothems. There are twisted helictite formations and rimstone dams, which are both rather rare. The one hour tour includes a 73-step spiral staircase, so it requires a certain physical fitness.

Squire Boone cave is a river cave. The river leaves the cave at its entrance and is used to run the grind mill. This spring has an average production of 40,000 gallons per hour. The tour includes some waterfalls inside the cave.

After his death in 1815 he was buried inside the cave as he had requested. Despite numerous near deadly wounds he received during his life, he died of dropsy.
